Running has always been something that’s been more about getting away, escaping life. While Trey is no longer running long distances (his marathon career apparently peaked before puberty), he is enjoying the occasional trot around the neighborhood. “That was a fun period in our lives,” Dave Hertel says. They went on to run another marathon in Dallas, running that race about 10 minutes faster. It’s one of those things you don’t realize what you’re capable of until you try it. “We just kind of trudged along - and we finished. “Dad never pushed me one bit,” Trey says. When they hit the 20-mile point, they looked at each other and figured they might as well try to finish. The day of the race, which was in San Antonio, they just started going, meeting Trey’s mother and brother every mile along the way in case either one wanted to stop. “It was a true father-and-son adventure,” Trey says.

They started running, up to 10 miles a day, five days a week. They decided, just for the heck of it, to try to run an entire marathon, never thinking they’d actually complete it. “We’d talk about life and goals as we ran.”Īctually, Dave says they talked about how much Trey wanted a dog (which they eventually got, and called him Speedy.) Regardless, they chatted as they ran, and that was how Dave could tell that Trey wasn’t tired - he kept talking. “Running with my dad was a real bonding experience,” Trey says. He and his father have fond memories of their running days. Today Trey is a 42-year-old financial adviser in Austin. Trey was 8 then, making him at the time one of the youngest people in Texas - possibly the youngest - to run a marathon. He told me he and his son Trey ran two marathons, side by side, in the late 1970s.
